Physiotherapists are degree trained professionals. Once graduated, most Physios will work in a hospital as a supervised junior, rotating through different areas of practice much like doctors do. In this way we can gain experience of a wide range of health problems. Physios will often go on to specialise in order to become expert in any number of fields including sports injury, women’s health, outpatients, cardio- respiratory, intensive care, elderly care, paediatrics and orthopaedics. In addition we can develop special interests, acupuncture for example.
The Physiotherapy profession grew up in hospitals as a rehabilitation discipline. This means we are concerned with the whole person: what is your role at home? What are the stressors at work? What sports and activities do you take part in? How can we fit your rehabilitation into your busy life? The goal is not only to get you better but to prevent recurrence of problems in the future.
Outpatient Physiotherapy is what many people recognize. You come to see us because you have hurt yourself or pain has crept up on you and won’t go away. We are trained to diagnose problems with your joints, ligaments, nerves, muscles and other soft tissues. In addition to hands on treatment you will be educated about posture and given exercises to help realign your body and re-establish normal movement and function.
Some of the many problems we can help with include: back pain, neck pain, headaches, whiplash, sports injury and rehabilitation, postural and work-related pain (RSI), falls and poor balance, arthritis, shoulder pain, nerve entrapment, 'slipped' disc, sciatica, pregnancy aches and pains, pelvic floor weakness and bladder problems.
